Montreux is one of the world's most attractive destinations for retirement — combining exceptional natural beauty, a mild climate, world-class healthcare, political stability and a high quality of life. This article explores what makes Montreux such a compelling choice for retirees.

Why retirees choose Montreux

Montreux has been attracting retirees from across the world for more than a century. The combination of mild climate, natural beauty, excellent healthcare and political stability makes it one of the most desirable retirement destinations in Europe. The town is compact and walkable — ideal for residents who prefer not to drive. The public transport system is excellent, and the lakefront promenade provides a beautiful setting for daily walks.

For retirees from the UK, the US, the Middle East and other high-tax jurisdictions, Switzerland's tax system — particularly the lump-sum tax regime (forfait fiscal) available in Vaud — offers significant advantages. Retirees with significant investment income or assets can benefit from a very favourable effective tax rate under the forfait fiscal.

Healthcare for retirees

Switzerland's healthcare system is one of the finest in the world — and this is particularly important for retirees. The Hôpital Riviera-Chablais (15 minutes from Montreux) and the CHUV in Lausanne (30 minutes) provide world-class medical care. The Clinique La Prairie in Clarens — adjacent to Montreux — is world-renowned for its longevity and preventive medicine programmes.

Health insurance premiums increase with age in Switzerland — retirees should budget for higher premiums than younger residents. Comprehensive supplementary insurance — covering private hospital rooms, dental care and international coverage — is strongly recommended for retirees.

Residence permits for retirees

EU/EFTA retirees can obtain a B residence permit in Switzerland on the basis of proof of sufficient financial resources — typically a minimum of CHF 120,000 to CHF 200,000 per year in income or equivalent assets. Non-EU/EFTA retirees can also obtain a residence permit on the basis of financial independence, subject to the cantonal quota system.

Retirees who are considering the forfait fiscal should engage a Swiss tax adviser before taking up residence — the forfait fiscal must be negotiated with the cantonal tax authority before the individual takes up residence in Switzerland. The minimum taxable base in Vaud is CHF 400,000 per year.

Quality of life in retirement

The quality of life in Montreux in retirement is exceptional. The mild climate allows outdoor activities throughout the year — walking, cycling, sailing and swimming in summer; skiing and snowshoeing in winter. The cultural calendar — the Jazz Festival, the Christmas market, the wine harvest — provides a rich programme of events. The proximity to Geneva and Lausanne ensures access to world-class cultural institutions.

The social life of Montreux is welcoming to new residents — there are numerous associations, clubs and organisations that provide opportunities to meet people and build a social network. Many retirees in Montreux report that their social life is richer and more varied than it was in their home country.
