Chernex is a quiet residential area situated above Montreux, on the hillside between the town centre and the higher Alpine villages. It offers a peaceful, green environment with elevated views over the lake and Alps, and a property market characterised by houses, villas and larger apartments.

Character and setting

Chernex sits at an altitude of approximately 600–700 metres above sea level, above the main Montreux urban area. The neighbourhood is predominantly residential — a mix of detached houses, villas and apartment buildings set in a green, semi-rural environment. The atmosphere is quiet and family-oriented.

The elevated position provides excellent views over the lake and the surrounding mountains. On clear days, the panorama from Chernex encompasses the full sweep of Lake Geneva, the Dents du Midi and the French Alps — a view that is genuinely spectacular.

Property types and prices

Chernex is predominantly a house and villa market, with a smaller proportion of apartments. Properties tend to be larger than in the lower town — detached houses with gardens are common, and the overall density is lower. This makes Chernex particularly attractive for families and buyers who prioritise space and privacy.

Prices in Chernex are generally lower than in the lakeside areas of Montreux, reflecting the distance from the lake and the less prestigious address. Houses and villas range from CHF 1.5 million to CHF 5 million depending on size, condition and view quality. Apartments are available from CHF 700,000.

Access and connectivity

Chernex is accessible by road from Montreux centre — the journey takes approximately 10 minutes by car. Public transport connections are available via bus routes that connect Chernex to the Montreux train station. The area is also accessible by the Montreux-Oberland-Bernois (MOB) railway, which stops at Chamby (a short distance from Chernex).

Buyers considering Chernex should be comfortable with the need for a car for most daily activities — the neighbourhood is not walkable to the lake promenade or the main commercial centre.
